J'ai écrit ce livre il y a déjà 15 ans. L'histoire d'un voyage en mer de 3 ans, effectué pour la plongée sous-marine entre la Nouvelle Zélande et Mayotte. Un voyage en Mélanésie, en Asie, à travers l'Océan Indien qui m'a ramené changé sur une île que je connaissais déjà et que je garde bien au chaud au fond de mon cœur, Mayotte. Il y a dans ce livre, un récit, des extrait du carnet de voyage, des extraits du journal de plongée, des cartes, des traits d'humeur, et trois ans de ma vie. Je le publie désormais sur Hive en espérant que vous le lirez et le partagerez. I wrote this book 15 years ago. The story of a 3-year sea trip, made for scuba diving between New Zealand and Mayotte. VOICI LA PARTIE 2 - En Français

«...Allongé les yeux fixés sur le plafond blanc d’une chambre d’hôtel des hauts de la ville d’Auckland, je repense au Morgan 38 que je viens de visiter cet après-midi. Que reprocher à ce bateau? A première vue, rien. Le temps n’est désormais plus à la recherche mais à la prise de décision. Signer en bas du contrat et faxer un ordre de virement n’est pas la préoccupation première de ce soir. Par cette acquisition, je change de vie et je me lance dans cet inconnu fait de voyages, de mer et d’exploration sous-marine, qui me poursuit depuis si longtemps. Terminé le travail et ses salaires réguliers, terminé les doux airbags d’une sécurité sociale surdimensionnée, terminé la femme qui ne voudra pas suivre, terminé les projets de terriens aux risques consciencieusement formatés par nos hautes instances. Alors, je pars le vivre ce rêve...? Cette scène s’est produite il y a maintenant quatre années de cela et la réponse à cette question a bien évidemment était «OUI». Depuis, 12 000 nautiques ont glissé sous la carène d’Aurora, des centaines de plongées se sont immortalisées sur mes clichés, et de merveilleuses rencontres resteront à jamais gravées dans ma mémoire. Solitaire et débutant, voilà deux données d’un programme hauturier qui vous font passer illico presto pour un irresponsable confirmé. Mes débuts en voile, je les ai fait en Tunisie, sur mon premier voilier, un petit 7m50, «Sahara», cinq ans auparavant. Ce jour là, à quelques centaines de mètres du port de Sidi Bou Saïd, je me suis retrouvé au pied de mât de mon embarcation en compagnie de Thierry, cet ami que nous avons tous dans notre entourage, et qui, plus vous avancez dans l’énoncé d’un projet impossible, plus vous le voyez devenir enthousiaste, et vous demander: « ...on commence quand?! » Sur ce voilier, par une journée sans vent, l’un tirait sur la première corde à portée de main et l’autre commentait par un : « Quand tu tires sur celle-là, c’est là-haut que ça bouge... ». Pour des débutants, nous en étions de véritables! Six mois plus tard, je traversais la Méditerranée dans les deux sens, pour ce qui reste avant d’appareiller vers Nouméa, ma seule expérience «hauturière». Quant à la condition solitaire de mon projet, je la résume souvent à cette simple phrase: « Si tu attends quelqu’un pour commencer à faire les choses, tu passes ta vie à attendre », et la vie, elle, passera sans m’attendre... Je suis en ce moment à mi-chemin entre un rêve désormais incontestée et sa réalisation. On appelle cela la logistique, l’avitaillement, et aussi, la régularisation des papiers. Cette phase ne fait pas réellement parti du rêve initial, mais s’impose vite comme l’étape obligée de tout projet. Les calles d’Aurora se remplissent donc, les outils trouvent leur place, le compresseur de plongée est livré, l’appareil photo est mis au point, mes yeux s’usent sur la documentation technique en anglais de mon nouveau bateau, et ma patience se perd dans les procédures de régularisations des papiers. Car un bateau Américain acheté par un Français en Nouvelle Zélande, cela donne vite le tournis à la rigidité de l’homme de lois. Heureusement pour moi l’homme de lois ne manque pas d’initiatives. Régulièrement, il invente des lois, parfaitement légales, servant à contourner d’autres lois tout aussi légales dont il est également l’inventeur, et donnant la liberté d’agir comme si aucune de ces lois n’avaient jamais été inventées. Quel talent! J’utilise donc toute la panoplie de ces lois et contre lois, et Aurora est désormais en règle. Mais que cette dernière étape peut paraître ridicule et inutile lorsque l’on se trouve seul au milieu d’une mer, d’un océan, sans frontière, sans société, sans loi, et faisant cap vers un îlot, dont la seule démarche officielle sera de se présenter à un chef coutumier qui n’aura que faire de savoir si les papiers de votre embarcation ont été faits... Car à compter d’aujourd’hui, c’est bien de cela dont il s’agit. Plonger là où les bulles de mon scaphandre seront encore une découverte aux yeux des poissons. Deviner les tombants. Supposer la présence de vie marine. La vérifier. La photographier. Explorer en toute liberté. Laisser la route du voyage se construire au fur et à mesure des rencontres. Mais la mise en application d’un tel état d’esprit me demandera encore une petite année de mise en confiance. Une année pour finir de me familiariser avec Aurora, mais aussi, une année pour me défaire des dernières amarres me liant encore au quai immobile de notre schéma de vie. Un quai sur lequel je reviendrai certainement me reposer de temps à autres, mais que je dois désormais apprendre à ignorer. Cette année de mise en confiance prend son entame à Auckland pour une première grande traversée devant mener Aurora et son équipage vers des eaux plus chaudes, en Nouvelle Calédonie. Mon enthousiaste acolyte ne ratant jamais l’occasion de devenir débutant est là. Thierry m’accompagne dans cette première expérience au long cours, et cela me rassure, je dois bien l’avouer. La traversée est riche en apprentissage. Dix jours d’enseignements permanents, sur le voilier, sur la mer et sur soi-même. Tous les sentiments y passent. L’excitation du départ, le mal être par mauvais temps, la sensation de bonheur total portée par un spi gonflé de liberté, l’anxiété sous orage, la colère de se voir réveiller à peine couché, les fous rire de deux types seuls à 1000kms de toute terre, l’adoration devant quelques dauphins joueurs, l’ennui, la hâte, et la certitude d’avoir embarqué avec moi le parfait équipier.

«... Looking at the white ceiling of a hotel room in the upper city of Auckland, I think back to the Morgan 38 that I just visited this afternoon. What to blame this boat? At first sight, nothing. Time is no longer in the search but in the decision-making. Signing at the bottom of the contract and faxing a transfer order is not the main concern tonight. With this acquisition, I change my life and embark on this unknown journey, sea and underwater exploration that has been chasing me for so long. Finished the work and its regular salaries, finished the soft airbags of an oversized social security, finished the woman who will not follow, finished the projects of earthlings with risks conscientiously formatted by our high authorities. So, I go live this dream...? This scene occurred four years ago now and the answer to that question was obviously “YES”. Since then, 12,000 nautical miles have slipped under the Aurora’s hull, hundreds of dives have been immortalized on my photographs, and wonderful encounters will forever be etched in my memory. Solitaire and beginner, here are two data from a offshore program that make you look like an irresponsibility confirmed. My sailing debut, I did it in Tunisia, on my first sailboat, a small 7m50, «Sahara», five years ago. That day, a few hundred meters from the port of Sidi Bou Said, I found myself at the foot of the mast of my boat in the company of Thierry, this friend who we all have in our entourage, and who, the more you advance in the statement of an impossible project, The more you see him get excited, and ask yourself, “...when do we start?” On this sailboat, on a windless day, one was pulling the first rope within reach and the other was commenting by one: "When you pull on that one, it’s up there that it moves...". For beginners, we were real! Six months later, I was crossing the Mediterranean in both directions, for what remains before sailing to Nouméa, my only «offshore» experience. As for the solitary condition of my project, I often summarize it in this simple phrase: «If you wait for someone to start doing things, you spend your life waiting», and life will pass without waiting for me...

I am now halfway between a dream now undisputed and its realization. This is called logistics, refuelling, and also the regularization of papers. This phase is not really part of the initial dream, but quickly imposes itself as the required stage of any project. The streets of Aurora fill up, the tools find their place, the dive compressor is delivered, the camera is focused, my eyes wear on the technical documentation in English of my new boat, and my patience is lost in the procedures of regularisations of papers. Because an American boat bought by a Frenchman in New Zealand, it quickly makes the rigidity of the lawman dizzy. Fortunately for me the lawman does not lack initiatives. Regularly, he invents laws, perfectly legal, serving to circumvent other equally legal laws of which he is also the inventor, and giving the freedom to act as if none of these laws had ever been invented. What a talent! I use the full range of these laws and against laws, and Aurora is now in order. But that this last step may seem ridiculous and useless when one is alone in the middle of a sea, an ocean, without borders, without society, without law, and heading towards an island, whose only official approach will be to present themselves to a customary chief who will not have to know if the papers of your boat were made...

For from today, that is what it is all about. Dive where the bubbles of my diving suit will still be a discovery to fish eyes. Guess the tumbles. Assume the presence of marine life. Check it. Photograph it. Explore freely. Let the road of travel be built as meetings. But the implementation of such a state of mind will require me a little more year of confidence. A year to finish familiarizing myself with Aurora, but also, a year to get rid of the last moorings still tying me to the motionless dock of our life pattern. A dock on which I will certainly come back to rest from time to time, but which I must now learn to ignore. This year of confidence begins in Auckland for a first great crossing to lead Aurora and her crew to warmer waters, in New Caledonia. My enthusiastic acolyte who never misses the opportunity to become a beginner is here. Thierry accompanies me in this first long-term experience, and I must admit that it reassures me. The crossing is rich in learning. Ten days of permanent teaching, on the sailboat, on the sea and on oneself. All feelings pass there. The excitement of leaving, the difficulty in bad weather, the feeling of total happiness carried by a spi inflated freedom, anxiety under storm, anger to wake up barely lying down, the madmen laughing two types alone at 1000kms from all earth, the adoration in front of a few playful dolphins, the boredom, the haste, and the certainty that I had embarked with me the perfect partner.
