The Dig della LucasArts - Videogame review

Non sono abituata a scrivere recensioni, ma lo trovo doveroso in caso di prodotti che conservo con stima ed affetto sia nel cuore che nell'immaginario personale: è questo il caso di The Dig, avventura grafica della Lucas Arts datata 1995.
Si tratta di fantascienza, di quella che porta sul piatto ingredienti interessanti mescolati in modo poco scontato.
Nonostante ciò, è un videogioco che divide, o lo si ama o ne si resta insoddisfatti.

L'idea nasce da Stephen Spielberg, che utilizzando tematiche prese in prestito da Treasure of Sierra Madre e Forbidden Planet, voleva usare la trama per la sua serie TV Amazing Stories. Non avendo abbastanza budget, passa l'idea al suo amico George Lucas, affinchè la trasformi in videogioco. Ha così inizio una storia tormentata lunga 6 anni, in cui svariati team si susseguono per realizzare l'idea in forma di avventura grafica. Prima sotto la direzione di Noah Falstein (Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis) e Dave Grossman (Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge), poi di Brian Moriarty (Loom) per poi passare a Sean Clark (Sam & Max Hit the Road) che lo porterà a compimento.
Durante questo lungo travaglio, l'avventura grafica ha cambiato natura numerose volte, addirittura prendendo la forma di un RPG in una delle sue prime versioni, per poi assumere quella finale di un punta e clicca con puntatore intelligente, basato su piattaforma Scumm.

L'inizio della storia risulterà simile ad un celebre film: un asteroide è in rotta di collisione con la terra e la Nasa manda una missione shuttle per far esplodere delle cariche nucleari, nella speranza di deviarlo in un'orbita stabile. Dopo aver completato la missione, l'equipaggio scopre che l'asteroide è in realtà una nave spaziale creata da esseri intelligenti. La navicella si attiva e trasporta il team su un lontano pianeta. Il comandante Low, la giornalista Maggie Robbins e il geologo Ludger Brink dovranno esplorare questo strano mondo chiamato "Cocytus" per ritrovare la via di casa e rilevare alcune interessanti scoperte lungo la strada.

A differenza dell'idea iniziale di Spielberg, la caratterizzazione dei personaggi non è sfruttata al suo pieno potenziale, sebbene le loro interazioni siano comunque di rilievo per il proseguo della storia. Il tono del gioco è decisamente più serioso di altri titoli, ragion per cui The Dig è considerato la "pecora nera" della LucasArts. Ecco una lista di alcune delle tematiche e argomenti affrontati nel gioco:

La Xenoarcheologia
Il concetto di fantascienza è legato al concetto di futuro, inteso sia come la capacità di poter conoscere ed esplorare l'universo e quindi entrare in contatto con razze aliene, sia per la credenza comune che queste eventuali razze siano tecnologicamente più avanzate della civiltà terrestre.
Invece, è quasi un paradosso temporale immaginare una fantascienza basata sul passato, tracce aliene di una storia remota che nel presente possiamo solo raccontare attraverso l'interpretazione di un ambiente plasmato dalla loro eredità.
Nasce così la Xenoarcheologia, un'ipotetica scienza che, similmente all'archeologia, studia le rovine e le reliquie di antiche civiltà extraterrestri andate perse nel tempo.
Lo stesso nome del gioco, "The Dig", suggerisce che i protagonisti dovranno "scavare" e analizzare reperti archeologici per dare un senso al loro viaggio lontano dal pianeta terra.
Morte e resurrezione
Una tematica ricorrente nell'immaginario religioso e filosofico della storia umana è il concetto di morte e resurrezione. Ben meno ricorrente lo è nei videogiochi, dove non capita spesso di dover ragionare sul valore della morte e la possibilità di sconfiggerla sovvertendo le regole. C'è un prezzo da pagare per chi sfida il corso naturale delle cose?
The Dig è un ottimo titolo per esplorare la questione, tanto delicata quanto attraente.
Spacetime Four - Spacetime Six
Se lo spaziotempo in fisica è un modello matematico che esprime la struttura quadridimensionale dell'universo (le tre dimensioni dello spazio, più il tempo), nel videogioco viene introdotto il modello "Spacetime Six", che vanta tre dimensioni per lo spazio e ben tre per il tempo.
Nel videogioco, Spacetime Six viene descritta come una dimensione di incredibile bellezza in cui è possibile vedere ogni passato e ogni futuro.
Chiedendo venia agli esperti in materia, se una delle tre dimensioni è il tempo spazializzato della fisica classica, mi domando cosa possano essere le altre due.
Magari il tempo della coscienza di Bergsoniana memoria, il tempo qualitativo... oppure un tempo non lineare ma ciclico, il tempo di Nietzsche, degli antichi e dei Veda, in cui la dimensione del passato coesiste nel presente con la dimensione del futuro, in completa sincronicità, il quale spiegherebbe la possibilità di vedere il passato e il futuro, come si narra nel videogioco.

Se queste ragioni non sono abbastanza per chiarire il perchè ogni amante della fantascienza dovrebbe giocare a The Dig, c'è un altro aspetto da non trascurare: il profilo artistico.
Il gioco ha una grafica bidimensionale (simile a quella di altri titoli come Monkey Island) salvo per alcune sequenze tridimensionali create da Industrial Light & Magic. Tuttavia la risoluzione di 320x200 punti a 256 colori era già obsoleta rispetto agli standard di mercato.
Infatti, ciò che rende qualitativo l'aspetto grafico del gioco non sono le specifiche tecniche, ma il design stesso, sia per il concept dell'archietettura aliena, sia per la resa cromatica. Le ambientazioni sono caratterizzate da forme geometriche riconducibili ai solidi euclidei, con triangoli e poligoni valorizzati da un contrasto caldo/freddo tra primo piano e sfondo. Il giocatore viene immerso in un paesaggio surreale pur sempre mantenendo la massima leggibilità delle scene.
La colonna sonora è altrettanto elegante, composta da Michael Land già autore di musiche per Monkey Island. L'autore usa il sintetizzatore unitamente a dei campionamenti della musica di Wagner, rendendo il sonoro allo stesso tempo classico ma dispersivo, che accompagna il giocatore lungo questo viaggio quasi esistenziale.

The Dig può risultare frustrante per alcuni giocatori, a causa di enigmi con pochi indizi che rischiano di lasciarti senza una chiara idea di dove andare o cosa fare: ma se si riesce ad andare oltre il gameplay, il gioco non può che lasciare il segno.

The Dig della LucasArts - Videogame review

I'm not used to writing reviews, but I find it dutiful in case of products that I hold with great esteem and affection both in the heart as well as in my personal imagination: this is the case of The Dig, a graphic adventure by Lucas Arts dated 1995.
It is science fiction, of the kind that brings a non-obvious mix of ingredients on the table.
Inspite of it, you can either love it or be dissatisfied, no middle ground.

The idea came from Stephen Spielberg, whom, using themes borrowed from Treasure of Sierra Madre and Forbidden Planet, wanted to use the plot for his TV series Amazing Stories. Not having enough budget, he passed the idea to his friend George Lucas, to turn it into a video game. Thus began a tormented story of 6 years, in which several teams tried to concretize the idea in the form of graphic adventure. At first under the direction of Noah Falstein (Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis) and Dave Grossman (Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge), then of Brian Moriarty (Loom) and finally of Sean Clark (Sam & Max Hit the Road) who will complete it.
During this neverending journey, the graphic adventure has changed many times, even taking the form of an RPG in one of its earliest versions, to then become a point and click with smart pointer, based on the Scumm platform.

The beginning of the story will be similar to a famous flick: an asteroid is on a collision course with earth and NASA sends a shuttle mission to explode nuclear charges, hoping to divert it into a stable orbit. After completing the mission, the crew discovers that the asteroid is actually a spaceship created by intelligent beings. The spacecraft activates and transports the team to a distant planet. Commander Low, journalist Maggie Robbins and geologist Ludger Brink will have to explore this strange world called "Cocytus" to rediscover the way back home and make some interesting discoveries along the way.

Unlike Spielberg's initial idea, the personality of characters is not explored to its full potential, although their interactions are still relevant for the continuation of the story. The tone of the game is definitely more serious than other titles, which is why The Dig is considered the "black sheep" of LucasArts.

Xenoarchaeology
The concept of science fiction is linked to the concept of future, both for the ability to know and explore the universe and therefore come into contact with alien races, as well as for the common belief that these races are technologically more advanced than terrestrial civilization.
Instead, it is almost a temporal paradox to imagine a science fiction based on the past, alien traces of a remote history that in the present we can only tell through the interpretation of an environment shaped by their legacy. Thus Xenoarchaeology was born, a hypothetical science that, similarly to archeology, studies the ruins and relics of ancient extraterrestrial civilizations lost over time.
The same name of the game, "The Dig", suggests that the protagonists will have to "dig" and analyze archaeological finds to make sense of their journey far from planet earth.
Death and resurrection
A recurrent theme in the religious and philosophical imagery of human history is the concept of death and resurrection. Far less common it is in videogames, where not often you're called to wonder about the value of death and the possibility of defeating it by subverting the rules. Is there a price to pay for those who challenge the natural course of things?
The Dig is a great title to explore the issue, as delicate and attractive as it is.
Spacetime Four - Spacetime Six
If spacetime in physics is a mathematical model that expresses the four-dimensional structure of the universe (the three dimensions of space, plus time), the "Spacetime Six" model is introduced in the videogame, which boasts three dimensions for space and three for time.
In the videogame, Spacetime Six is described as a dimension of incredible beauty in which it is possible to see every past and every future.
Apologizing to experts who could truly explain this model, if one of the three dimensions is the spatialized time of classical physics, I wonder what the other two may be.
Perhaps the time of Bergsonian consciousness, qualitative time ... or a non-linear but cyclic time, the time of Nietzsche, of the ancients and the Vedas, in which the dimension of the past coexists in the present with the dimension of the future, in complete synchronicity, which would explain the possibility of seeing the past and the future, as narrated in the videogame.

If these reasons are not enough to clarify why every science fiction lover should play The Dig, there is another aspect not to be forgotten: the artistic profile.
The game has two-dimensional graphics (similar to that of other titles such as Monkey Island) except for some three-dimensional sequences created by Industrial Light & Magic. However, the resolution of 320x200 px with 256 colors was already obsolete compared to market standards.
In fact, what makes the graphic aspect of the game qualitative is not the technical specifications, but the design itself, both for the concept of the alien architecture, as well as for the color rendering. The settings are characterized by geometric shapes that resemble Euclidean solids, with triangles and polygons enhanced by a warm/cold contrast between the foreground and the background. The player is immersed in a surreal landscape while still maintaining a maximum readability of the scenes.
The soundtrack is equally elegant, composed by Michael Land who already wrote music for Monkey Island. The author uses synthesizer together with samples of Wagner's music, making the sound at the same time classic and dispersive, which accompanies the player along this almost existential journey.

The Dig can be frustrating for some players, because of its riddles with scarce clues that leave you without a clear idea of where to go or what to do: but if you manage to get over the gameplay, it will definitely leave its mark.
